Fleas and ticks can be found worldwide and can live in many climate zones. Prevention is key to avoid infestations and to prevent disease.

Fleas are the most common nuisance and parasite affecting cats, and an infestation can lead to serious health problems. Flea control requires a three-pronged approach; they need to be eliminated from 1) your cat, 2) any other cats and dogs that you have, 3) your home and yard. There are many flea control products available and your veterinarian can help you determine which are safest and most effective for your pets.

Your veterinarian has prescribed fluconazole to treat ringworm or another fungal infection.

Fludrocortisone acetate (brand names: Florinef®, Astonin®, Astonin H®, Florinefe®, Lonikan®) is used off-label to treat adrenal gland insufficiency or hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease) in cats, dogs, and ferrets. It may also be used with other medications to treat hyperkalemia. Fludrocortisone acetate is given by mouth.

Flunixin meglumine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication used for treating inflammation and pain associated with musculoskeletal disease.

Fluocinolone + acetonide DMSO (brand name Synotic®) is applied topically and is labeled to treat ear inflammation in dogs. It is also used off-label to treat ear infections in cats. Give as directed. Side effects are rare but may include temporary hearing loss or skin reactions. Do not use on pets allergic to corticosteroids or DMSO, on pets with a ruptured ear drum or pets that are pregnant.

Fluoroquinolone topical formulations are used to treat bacterial infections. They are used off label to treat external ear infections by topically applying the medication directly to the ear canal. Side effects may include increased redness or inflammation and should be discontinued and call your veterinarian if this occurs.

Fluoxetine is used to treat a variety of behavioral disorders in cats. It may be used to correct aggressive behavior, thunderstorm phobias and excessive licking and hair pulling. Fluoxetine HCl is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant.

Fluralaner (brand name Bravecto®) is given by mouth or applied topically to treat and prevent flea and tick infestations in dogs and cats. It is sometimes used off label to treat sarcoptic mange, demodectic mange, or ear mites in dogs and cats. It is also sometimes used for skin and ear mites in rabbits and hedgehogs.
